Belize, the Barrier Reef & GuatemalaThe Government of Belize was recently sent a proposition by Norwegian Cruise Line to establish a major cruise port on Crawl Caye – 11 miles NE of Placencia Village. The Belize Tourism Industry Association (BTIA) and the Belize Institute of Environmental Law & Policy (BELPO) were both opposed to the plan. Belize put together a Sustainable Tourism Master Plan last year, and that plan only allows “Pocket cruise tourism… on the SE coast of Belize” which is less than 250 passengers. A Norwegian Cruise would bring more than 2000 passengers, and that amount of foot traffic could spoil the beauty of Belize. Because of these reasons, the Government of Belize has rejected Norwegian’s proposal.
