From Kirkenes to Bergen, you’ll interact with Norwegian culture, history and people daily. The ‘Classic Voyage South’ stops in 34 ports of call along the coastline of Norway. Some stops will be as short as 15 minutes – just long enough to let people off or on, pick up some local seafood, or drop off the mail! Other stops will be longer for you to explore the town or city.
With 12 ships, there’s one leaving Kirkenes almost every day of the year. Two factors will help you choose: Season and Voyage Style. To help you choose which season would fit you best:
Spring and the Arctic Awakening
Spring has the most options for shore excursions. In the north, it may still be very winter-like in climate as the season changes more slowly. In the south, you’ll play in the spring and almost summer climate! Its also the perfect season for fresh Lyngenfjord shrimp!
Summer and the Midnight Sun
When you’re above the Arctic Circle, enjoy 24-hours of daylight! (Don’t worry – your cabins have blackout shades.) Since the thawing has happened, you’ll be able to more easily cruise into the fjords and even participate in more adventurous activities like kayaking or going on safaris in search of whales or sea eagles!
Fall and the Autumn Gold
Taste the harvest of Norway! Indulge in unique flavors like cloudberries or reindeer meat. Listen to Norwegian folk music and spend time exploring the culture of the old ways.
Winter and Hunting the Light
This is your best season for experiencing the Aurora Borealis – the Northern Lights! Watch the king crab fishers bring in their catch in the Barents Sea. Maybe book yourself a snowmobiling or husky sled trip over the arctic snow!
Which Voyage Style is right for you?
Classic Style Voyages
This is Hurtigruten’s traditional Norway experience. Your English-speaking team will introduce you to the people and culture of Norway, with opportunities to customize your sightseeing experience and activities for all levels.
Expedition Style Voyages
This includes everything from the Classic Style Voyages, but taken to the next step. Three of Hurtigruten’s ships (the MS Nordkapp, MS Nordnorge, and MS Nordlys) will be devoted to these new voyages for 2016 for 6-, 7-, 11-, and 12-day itineraries. Expedition means you’ll have additional opportunities to more actively explore the coast and to interact with the people of Norway. The onboard Expedition Team will lead daily adventures in the Arctic wilderness.
Vintage Era Voyages
Board the MS Lofoten for 60’s era charm and nostalgia. The oldest ship in the Hurtigruten fleet, the MS Lofoten was launched in 1964. She has been restored to bring to life her prime, and reflect the atmosphere of the era. The cabins are simple, but comfortable. Often a customer favorite, you’ll enjoy the authentic experience of these voyages. Your Vintage Voyage will be enhanced by traditional Norwegian activities, like fishing from the deck, ice swimming, trivia and a hat parade! The 60’s era menu may be the best part for many passengers: sherry or aperitifs before dinner, served from silver platters, and all local cuisine from the very ports you’re visiting.
