Theme Cruises

Civil War: There is no more defining moment in the history of the South than the Civil War. The Mississippi River was often at the forefront of the war, because of its strategic advantages for transportation. Learn about skirmishes and visit local sites that will bring you into the experience. Noted Civil War historians will invite you into a lost world of bloody battlefields, hallowed cemeteries and the ramparts.

The 50s and 60s Remembered: The Grand Saloon will be Rockin’ and Rollin’ as you cruise the Mississippi River on the American Queen! Put on your dancin’ shoes and shake it all night long to the music of the 1950’s and 60’s! From the silky smooth tones of Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole, to the groovin’ tunes of the Stones, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles, you’ll find the right music to move you on this summer cruise.

DAILY ITINERARY

Day 1: Overnight Deluxe Hotel Stay in St. Louis, MO

Day 2: Embark in St. Louis, MO*

Day 3: Chester, IL

Chester is the ‘Home of Popeye’! The river town has embraced its history as the hometown for Popeye creator, Elzie Crisler Segar, and the theory that the character is based on local Frank ‘Rocky’ Fiegel. The town has created a series of Popeye character statues and placed them around town. This year, King Blozo will be placed at City Hall as statue 13 on the Popeye Character Trail. My favorite is probably the statue of Wimpy, hamburger in hand in Gazebo Park!

Day 4: Cape Girardeau, MO

This small town in the river was the inspiration for Mark Twain’s Life on the Mississippi. When you explore, be sure to visit the Cape River Heritage Museum. It’s a great snapshot at the history of the region, the river, and Missouri. Photo Op: Take a picture of yourself in the model steamboat or the tall-ladder fire truck! (Your grandkids will be so jealous!)

Day 5: Paducah, KY

Paducah sits at the crossroads of the Mississippi, Ohio, Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers. Popular stops in Paducah include the National Quilt Museum, Lloyd Tilghman House and Civil War Museum, and the Paducah Railroad Museum!

Day 6: Dover, TN

Today is about history, specifically Civil War history. Walk thru the battlefield of Fort Donelson and learn more about the battle at the Visitor Center. At the Surrender House (Dover Hotel), learn about the unconditional surrender of General Buckner to General Grant – the first major victory of the Union Army during the Civil War. Then explore the Fort Donelson National Cemetery – originally created for Union soldiers, but also containing graves for veterans of the Spanish-American War, both World Wars, Korea and Vietnam. 512 of the original 670 Union solders buried here were unknown soldiers.

Day 7: New Madrid, MO

Now that we’re back on the Mississippi River, head to the New Madrid Historical Museum to learn more about the history of the river and this river town.

Day 8: Ashport Landing, TN

Today we’ll head to Fort Pillow for an in-depth tour of the reconstructed fort and the grounds. Fort Pillow has historic and archaeological significance.

Day 9: Disembark in Memphis, TN
