Big Band Swing has been one of the most popular themes on the American Queen every year for one very special reason: the nostalgia of the swing era (1920s-30s) with live band performances in the Grand Saloon onboard the most opulent riverboat in the world! The guest orchestras will have you dancing to the old familiar tunes. If you are in a Luxury Suite or AAA Suite, be sure to reserve your box seat for a performance with commodore services. But what fun to sit closer to the action and enjoy a live performance by the orchestra. Maybe you’ll even convince your friend or partner to take a turn with you on the floor!

Big Band Swing music theme Mississippi River cruise aboard the paddlewheel American Queen - big band guest orchestra performance in the Grand Saloon.

DAILY ITINERARY

Day 1: Overnight Deluxe Hotel in New Orleans, LA

Day 2: Embark in New Orleans, LA

Board the American Queen this afternoon before our steamboat departs New Orleans at 5pm.

Day 3: Oak Alley, LA

The always popular and often-photographed Oak Alley in Saint James Parish will leave you in wonder of the 300 year-old oak trees that line the path to the gorgeous white house. Learn about the history and culture of the region, while dreamily walking in the trees. Sip a Mint Julep during your guided tour of the Big House, and suddenly you’ll be living in a different time.

Day 4: St. Francisville, LA

The original settlement of Bayou Sara was destroyed by flooding and fires. Many of the structures were hauled up the bluff to St. Francisville, where they still stand. The southern charm is evident as soon as you walk past the Spanish moss-covered trees between touring their historic homes, beautiful churches and taking pictures with your friends in their breathtaking parks.

Day 5: Natchez, MS

Natchez Indians and the first French explorers shared this beautiful piece of the river for many years. Officially founded in 1716, Natchez is the oldest city on the Mississippi River. Wherever you go, you’ll experience another piece of history, including unique shops, restaurants, museums and the historic homes of Natchez.

Day 6: Vicksburg, MS

Civil War history is alive in Vicksburg, Lincoln’s ‘Key to the South.’ This vital river port city has since become a rich historical visit for tourists who want to learn about the battles of Vicksburg, as well as visit their museums.

Day 7: Baton Rouge, LA

The Capital of Louisiana offers a unique look at the history and flavor of the state. If you’re looking forward to practicing your French skills, beware: the locals speak a specific version of French only found here.

Day 8: Nottoway, LA

Explore the largest remaining antebellum deep south mansion in this included tour of Nottoway Plantation. This mansion is three floors, 64-bedrooms, and has 22 white square columns, contributing to its nickname, ‘The White Castle of Louisiana”.

Day 9: Disembark in New Orleans, LA
