Spend the night tonight watching the sunset at the Plaza Hotel in San Carlos Bay. (L, D)

Day 3–San Carlos–Alamos

The Sea of Cortes’ maritime desert environment shelters a number of rare endemic species of flora and fauna found nowhere else. Cruise past uninhabited islands with exotic tangles of cacti and succulent landscapes. In the early afternoon, depart for Alamos. Along the way, travel through the agricultural heartland of Sonora. Tonight celebrate with a traditional “welcome cocktail” and a Mexican fiesta with the region’s best singers and dancers. Ole! (B, L, D)

Day 4–Alamos–El Fuerte

Buenos Dias! Today enjoy a colorful walking tour through the cobblestone streets visiting some fabled mansions that have been restored to their original glory. The city of Alamos has been declared a national historic landmark. Tonight stay in El Fuerte, a quaint colonial town on the Fuerte River. Day 5–El Fuerte–Copper Canyon

All aboard! The excitement begins as you board our private rail car and travel the famous Chihuahua-al-Pacifico route into the wilds of the Sierra Madre Mountains. The route is rated one of the most scenic train routes in the world featuring views of titanic cliffs, small villages and vast canyonlands. Four times the size of the Grand Canyon, this is one of the most dramatic panoramas in the world. Man’s greatest engineering feat within this defiant geography is the railroad which traverses it. Almost 100 years in the making, the tracks climb from sea level to nearly 8,000 feet, crossing some of the highest bridges in the world and 87 tunnels including a mile long, 360 degree spiral! Arrive in Divisadero mid-afternoon. Enjoy this peaceful setting and spectacular canyon views for the next two nights. (B, L, D)

Day 6–Copper Canyon

Discover more of the canyon and its inhabitants with a mid-morning walking tour to the cave dwellings of the Tarahumara Indians, one of the most isolated tribes in North America. The rugged countryside has preserved the ancient culture and traditional lifestyle of these interesting people. Enjoy a demonstration of their local dance and see the sport that has earned these simple farmers international recognition –barefoot, long distance running. There is time today for some optional hiking or horseback riding. Enjoy another night of spectacular beauty in the heart of the canyon. (B, L, D)

Day 7–Copper Canyon–Casas Grandes

After breakfast, we’re off to the mountainside village of Creel where the Tarahumara, traditionally dressed in vibrant-colored clothing, sell their handmade art and souvenirs. Next we’ll descend from the mountains to sea level, all in one spectacular day. Tonight sit back and relax at our lovely hotel in the city of Casas Grandes. Spend the evening with your fellow passengers at the farewell dinner. (B, L, D)
