Cruise Vacation Etiquette

Etiquette is something we learn as we grow up, but when it comes to traveling, there is etiquette involved there, too. Vacation is a time to let your hair down and relax a little, but it doesn’t mean you should take a break from being courteous and responsible.

Here’s how to avoid being an obnoxious tourist.

#1: Show appreciation.

Whether you are at a hotel or a restaurant at your vacation destination, it is always a great idea to be respectful and courteous to the people who are taking care of you. Maybe it is your housekeeper, the front desk person at the hotel, your waiter at the local restaurant down the road, or a passerby who gave you directions. Whomever you meet along the way, treat them with kindness, tip them well, if need be, and thank them for their help.

#2: Be discreet.

Social media dominates a lot of people’s lives, and when it comes to vacationing, travelers love posting about their adventures. However, make sure to use some discretion when posting about your vacation. Endless shots of your feet in the sand or pictures of the meals you are eating can get annoying to your followers on social media. In addition, if these posts or your destination check-ins are set for public viewing, it could signal that your house is empty, which could alert potential burglars to target your home while you’re away.

#3: Be respectful.

Visiting new places is an exciting way to experience life to the fullest. But remember, be respectful along the way. Treat the land and various landmarks you encounter with reverence, just like you would treat the area that you live in. For example, don’t stand on or touch historical landmarks that are deemed untouchable. And don’t litter.
