The French know cheese, and they’ve turned Gruyère cheese into an elegant and simple appetizer. Viking Cruise Line chefs have shared their recipe for this versatile appetizer you can make at home.
Using just a large pot on the stove and a baking sheet, you can create a decadent treat that is easily personalized. The traditional recipe calls for Gruyère cheese, but you could also try a similarly textured cheese for a change – perhaps fontina, smoky swiss, or sharp cheddar. If you like a little kick, try pepperjack cheese. You can add a bit of extra flavor or color with a sprinkle of green onion, chives, or bacon crumbles on top just before baking. It can be fun to try new flavors, although it may be hard to beat the traditional flavors!
If you don’t have parchment paper on hand, a Silpat sheet liner will work just as well.
