Just last week, I posted about the new guidelines being put on the canal in Venice: no ship over 96,000 gross tons beginning November 2014. This week in Venice, the cruise line, Costa, announced that their biggest ship to date, the Costa Diadema, will begin service October 2014 (just before the ban). The Diadema will be 132,500 gross tons… too big for Venice. Not only is it too big for Venice’s Guidecca Canal, but it’s bigger than the Costa Concordia, which crashed last year in Italy (114,147 gross tons). It appears that no one is learning their lesson… big ships are getting too big!
