Columbia River Gorge

Things to Do

Fort Dalles Museum

All that remains of the 1856 Fort Dalles is the Surgeon’s Quarters – where the museum is now housed. First opened in 1905, this is one of Oregon’s oldest museums. Because of its pivotal place in local history and on the Oregon Trail, there is a great focus on pioneer and military artifacts. There is also a collection of wagons and antique automobiles. The museum is open daily, from 10am-5pm.

The Columbia Gorge Discovery Center – Photo Op!!

The interactive museum shows the entire 11,000-year history of the relationship between human beings and this important piece of land, right on the river, as well as the longer history of the Gorge and its creation. More than just a museum, the center is on a 54-acre site with walking trails, scenic overlooks, and a pond. Open daily from 9am-5pm.

Pioneer Cemetery

The land for the City Graveyard was donated in 1860. It was used as the Indian Mission Cemetery. There are 228 graves.

The Talking Murals – Photo Op!!

There are twelve murals decorating the downtown of The Dalles. Each mural tells a story of the history of The Dalles, from Native Americans to the Lewis & Clark expedition, to pioneers who crossed the gorge through The Dalles. Visit The Dalles Chamber of Commerce to purchase a key that will activate the audio narration of some of the murals.

Romul’s $$

Not owned by the same people as the location in Hood River, this Italian restaurant has incorporated a Chinese-Vietnamese menu alongside their Italian options. Great place if your party wants variety. Open for dinner, 4pm-9pm Monday thru Saturday.
