Cindy-we had such a great trip with AMA Waterways to France. Everything went so well, even the weather cooperated with us – no rain and comfortable temperatures. The crew, the food and the ship were all excellent.
The Normandy Beaches and American cemetery impressed us very much- we watched the movie “The Longest Day” before we left, so the museum and seeing the beaches was very special. They are so tranquil today after having been the scene of such horror 70 years ago.
We loved the Monet Gardens in Giverny. The flowers were beautiful – so many colors. We also got to tour a very interesting museum of impressionistic art by both Monet and his contemporaries with an excellent guide.
Then there were the smaller towns that we hadn’t known much about but which turned out to be charming. There was a Saturday morning market in Caudebec that was such fun. Honfleur is a lovely resort town – we were taking pictures constantly. And we also enjoyed sampling the Calvados which is apple brandy (even had to purchase a bottle or two.) Rouen had so much history, great buildings, a cathedral as well as being the site of the Burning of Jeanne d’Arc. Then near Conflans we toured a home of Napoleon & Josephine which was so beautiful and elaborately decorated – quite a bit of history there, too.
Our last night was on the Seine River in Paris. They moved the ship to a spot where we could view the lit Eiffel Tower and the French version of our Statue of Liberty. Just lovely, especially when the lights on the tower started sparkling at 10:00.
